Gay rights celebrated at State Capitol

About 200 people showed up for PROMO's annual rally at the State Capitol. Darryl Franklin has more on the group's dissapointment with recent measures infringing on gay rights.

A higher turnout than usual showed up at PROMO's annual rally at the Capitol this year. The group's Development Director Julie Brueggemann says despite what legislators are saying the acts of lawmakers is hurting the gay community.

"Our state Constitution is not made to discriminate against people and it's definitely hurtful and for them to claim that it's not is even more hurtful."

PROMO members say they're concerned with numerous bills filed in 2004 that write a ban on gay and lesbian marriage in the state Constitution.

Missouri's gay and lesbian community expressed their frustration with recent measures taken by the House to more narrowly define marriage.

Rep. Kevin Engler -- one of the proponents of the bills restricting marriage -- says legislation already exists to restrict the definition of marriage.

"We already have it in statute. We already have the law in the books. The only thing were trying to do with this resolution is take it to the vote of the people to put it in constitutional law to keep from happening what's happened in Massachusetts and other states."

About 200 people from accross the state came to the Capitol from across the state to express their dissapointment with legislators attempting to narrow the way the Constitution defines marriage. PROMO member Ed Reggi says the House and Senate are wasting their time on the gay rights issue.
