MU fraternity bans alcohol

Two weeks after university police found a Beta Theta Pi pledge drunk and beaten, the fraternity has decided to ban alcohol from its house.

Mike Hargens, the chapter president, presented the ban to the fraternity's regional directors Monday.

The Oct. 1 incident caused the freshmen to be hospitalized for two days.

The university has held hearings into allegations that the fraternity has encouraged excessive drinking.

Despite the increases in odds and cash prizes, a ticket will still cost one dollar.

Gary Gonder, a spokesman for the Missouri Lottery Commission, said the changes are expected to increase lottery profits.

Missouri's "Blue Book" dedicated to the man who made it green!

Secretary of State Bekki Cook dedicated the 1997-1998 issue of Missouri's Official Manual to the former secretary of State James Kirkpatrick.

Exactly 30 years ago, Kirkpatrick changed the color of the "Blue Book" to a powder blue.

That issue was followed in later years with an issue in MU's black-and-gold, an issue in red-white-and-blue and several issues in Irish green -- a play on Kirkpatrick's Irish name.

Kirkpatrick attended the dedication cermonies and got his personal copy of the new manual bound in green leather. He got the only green issue. All the others are in the old, official color of blue.

Missouri's Conservation Department is predicting a more colorful fall than normal.

The department predicts the colors will reach their peak after this next weekend.

Lawmakers remain skeptical about a tax hike for road construction.

Lawmakers continued to express little support for a tax hike for road construction that has been recommended by a special task force.

The proposal, to propose to the voters a one-cent-per-dollar sales tax increase to the state sales tax, was discussed Monday at a special joint legislative committee on transportation.

Most of the tax-hike money would be used to complete a 15-year road-construction plan that has run short of funds.

The previous Friday, the State Auditor issued a report putting much of the blaim on the Transportation Department itself for falling behind with the plan.

Tigers and Rams both lose.

Both the MU Tigers and St. Louis Rams football teams lost last weekend -- decisively.

Kansas State overwhelmed Mizzou 41-11 Saturday in Manhattan.

The Kansas City Chiefs, who had a bye last week, plays Thursday at home against San Diego.
