House passes it's version of welfare reform

The House has gone along with the Senate to impose tougher restrictions on welfare.

Wrap: The House cut the time a Missourian can be on welfare in half.

Currently, the amount of time one can have government welfare assistance is five years. The House voted to make the lifetime limit two years.

Republican Representative John McCaherty said the term is temporary for reason.

Description: "It's not meant for years and years and years I would say it's not meant for two or three years it's deffinetly not meant for five."

The bill was also met with much opposition from mostly Democrats saying that it would hurt those already suffering financially.

The bill will go back to the Senate that approved a four year rather than a two year lifetime ban on welfare.

Those in favor of the bill say that the temporary government assistance is called temporary for a reason.

Wrap: The Senate passed a bill that would cut the current five year limit to be on welfare to four years.

The House took it even further and cut the amount of time to two years.  

Republican Representative Diane Franklin says the bill say that this would give more money to those who need it.

Description: "The ultimate goal of this would be that the folks that need to be on TANF are there and the ones that for whatver reason decide not to be compliant or don't need to be there aren't."

The bill was met with opposition that the government would be taking away from those who already have little.

The bill will now be sent back to the Senate for approval.
