State Capitol Bureau

Intro:  With the Cardinals home opener approaching, the Missouri General Assembly is working to change the name of a part of I-70.

Wrap: Legislators are looking into taking Mark McGwire's name off the stretch highway in St. Louis.

The proposed bill would rename it after Missouri author Mark Twain.

But Senator Tim Green from St. Louis County had a different idea.

Description: "Mark Twain's from Hannibal, I would go...a true St. Louisan is Stan Musial because he comes across as a very nice human being."

The Cardinals first home game is against the Houston Astros on Monday.

The bill passed through the Senate but is, however, awaiting committee assignment in the House.

From the State Capitol, I'm Scott Kanowsky.

Intro:  Legislators in the Missouri Senate already passed a bill stripping Mark McGwire's name from a stretch of I-70 in St. Louis.

Wrap: A bill that has already passed through the Senate force the name change.

It still needs to be assigned to a committee in the House.

St. Louis Senator Jim Lembke thinks McGwire should never have had the honor in the first place.

Actuality:  LEMBKE6.WAV
Run Time:  00:20
Description: "I think it's always dangerous to name a monument or a bridge or a highway after someone who's still alive. Well, I think you have opportunity and we're all human, we all make mistakes, and so I think it's always safer for us politicians to make those decisions if someone has warranted it after they pass away."

The bill would name it after Missouri author Mark Twain.

From the State Capitol, I'm Scott Kanowsky.
