The governor says his bill will prevent illegal immigrants from getting driver's licenses.

Missouri Department of Revenue spokesman David Griffith says illegal immigrants aren't getting licenses now.

Actuality:  GRIFITH1.WAV
Run Time: 00:07
Description: Really it's not a problem at all because currently we have safeguards that are in place that keep illegals from getting a Missouri driver's license.

People from outside the United States applying for a Missouri license must prove their legal presence in this country, going through an extra step in the process before being issued their license.

The governor's newest effort involves pushing a bill barring illegal immigrants from getting driver's licenses.

Missouri Department of Revenue spokesman David Griffith says the legislation must include measures against those trying to help illegal immigrants.

Actuality:  GRIFITH2.WAV
Run Time: 00:11
Description: There needs to be some teeth in that particular bill that would prevent people from assisting illegals from getting a driver license here in the state of Missouri.

Griffith said while an illegal immigrant cannot get a driver's license under the current safeguards, there will always be people who try to get around the system.
