JEFFERSON CITY - Gov. Blunt visited three Missouri university campuses to gain support of his Lewis and Clark initiative.

Under the initiative the state will get rid of Missouri's Higher Education Loan Authority also known as MOHELA.

    JEFFERSON CITY - Missouri Gov. Matt Blunt flew across Missouri Thursday to announce a plan to sell the state's college-loan underwriting program to the highest bidder.

    Blunt said the money raised from the sale could be used to build new buildings on university campuses and fund a college scholarship program.

    But both Republican and Democratic legislators warned that turning the loan program over to a profit-making corporation could drive up the costs of college loans.

    JEFFERSON CITY - In his State of the Judiciary speech, Chief Justice Michael Wolff asked lawmakers to increase judges salaries in order to attract more lawyers to the position.

    JEFFERSON CITY - Gov. Matt Blunt appeared before a crowd of about 400 people at a rally against some uses of the power of eminent

    domain. Chanting "no compromise," those in support of eminent domain reform argued the government should not

    use the power to seize property for commercial use, a power Blunt said is "repugnant."

    JEFFERSON CITY - A committee member's inability to read a hand-written prescription could have led to a patient's death, the committee was told by a physican advocating a digital medical record grant program.

    The committee heard testimoney on a proposal to establish a grant program to assist doctors and other health-care providers to switch to digital, network-based record systems.

    . A leading conservative legislator cautions against going too far in throwing the book at sex offenders. (01/24/06)

    JEFFERSON CITY - Senate Judiciary Chair Matt Bartle, R-Jackson County, questioned whether some of the more than a dozen sex offender bills filed this session go too far.

    Bartle said at a Judiciary Committee hearing on the issue that he would allow the key players affected by the bills, namely prosecuting attorneys, to look over the sex offender legislation before it gets passed out of the committee.

    JEFFERSON CITY - Senate Judiciary Committee heard 8 new pieces of legislation pertaining to sexual offenders and the Missouri Sexual Offender Registry.

    Some Senators, including original proponent, Matt Bartle, believe the Registry may cast too broad a net.

    JEFFERSON CITY - The house Democrats outlined a health care agenda Monday that would restore Medicaid to thousands of Missourians.

    The "Moving Missouri Foward" plan includes a provision that would allow Missouri to opt out of the federal clawback plan.

    JEFFERSON CITY - The Children's Service Comission plans to look at proposals from child welfare agencies and researchers regarding children who come from meth homes.

    According to the Midwestern Governor's Association, more than seven thousand Missouri children have been removed from their homes due to parent drug use.
