House Republicans break with governor's original proposal

House Republicans are trying to ensure that Missouri college students will not only have new facilities to attend school in, but the money with which to do it.

In a break with the governor's orignial MOHELA proposal, House Republicans presented their own wish list.

Changes include less money allocated to building improvements at universities and more for money set aside for scholarships.

Kansas City area Republican Representative Doug Ervin co-sponsored the proposal.

"So by creating an endowment which would be, if not the largest one of the largest in the country, we're really taking a huge step in ensuring that students in Missouri who are seeking to go to college are going to have a much better path, and easier path to get there in terms of tuition."

Democratic Representative Judy Baker said that currently confusion reigns on the subject of MOHELA's future. She says she wants to see more financial officers, students, parents and stakeholders involved in the process.
