Missouri Senators Vote to eliminate car safety inspections

Missouri Senators have voted to eliminate car safety inspections.

A bill on auto safety inspection and gas emissions will head to the Missouri Senate floor for a final vote next week.

According to an amendment from Republican Charlie Shields, safety inspection would be abolished statewide.

"There was an attempt several years back to do away with the program because it really has a limited effect on safety and most consumers consider it cumbersome."

Republican John Griesheimer of Washington, Missouri says he would be surprised if the governor's office would approve of the elimination of such a program.

Missouri Senate majority leader Charlie Shields told reporters Thursday that he wants to see the state's auto inspection program completely eliminated.

Republican John Griesheimer says the inspection program is a good maintenance prevention measure.

"It is the only way that you know and the most people know that your car is at least safety-wise ok, and-otherwise people would just continue to drive their vehicles til the wheels fell off."

In it's current form, the Senate bill provides that vehicle safety inspection stations in the St. Louis area may apply to become emissions inspectors as well.

Republican Charlie Shields used this bill to tack on his own amendment, calling for the elimination of vehicle safety inspections all together in Missouri.

"Inspections every year really have limited effect on safety and the quality of vehicles on he road certainly I think you could argue that by doing it every other year you really are limiting the effect."
