House committee defeats proposed changes to school funding

The legislature has hit another roadblock in its quest to fix school funding this session.

A House committee defeated proposed changes to the state's foundation formula.

The formula determines how state money is distributed to local schools.

St. Louis County Democrat Michael Corcoran said legislators are split based on geography .

"This is not a party-line division. This is a rural versus urban, suburban divisive issue."

Urban lawmakers said the proposed changes would have benefited rural districts more.

The bill to change funding remains in a committee with just over two weeks left in session.

A House committee defeated a bill to change the way Missouri distributes money to public school districts.

Legislators quickened efforts to fix school funding after school districts sued the state saying funding is unfair.

Democratic and urban committee members, including St. Louis City Democrat Yaphett El-Amin, voted against the bill.

"I don't believe the process that we've encumbered through today is going to yield fairness and equity to all students, regardless of their socioeconomic class."

The bill remains in a committee and House leaders say they hope to bring it to the floor for debate before session ends.
