Representitive Wants Constitutional Amendment On Eminent Domain

The Missouri Task Force on Eminent Domain released their preliminary report to the governor last week.

Now one Task Force member wants a constitutional amendment. Tim Walker has more from Jefferson City.

Republican State Representative Steve Hobbs from Mexico says he wants to take the information from the Task Force's meetings to introduce new legislation.

Hobbs says he wants to stop the state from giving private property to commercial developers for private use.

"I'm also looking at a constitutional amendment to put on the ballot in '06. To let the people of Missouri decide if they believe eminent domain should be used purely for economic development."

The task force plans to make its final recommendation to the Governor in December.

If one state representative has his way, Missourians will get to vote on a constitutional amendment to restrict the use of eminent domain.

One of the members, Republican state Representative Steve Hobbs from Mexico says he wants to make it illegal for the state government to take private land for use in private development. Hobbs says he believes a constitutional amendment is necessary.
