Senate OKs scrap tire bill.

The Senate gave preliminary approval to a bill aimed at creating a scap tire market in Missouri. Almitra Smith has more from Jefferson City.

Under the bill, grants would be given to businesses that use waste tires in making items such as asphalt.

The bill's sponsor Republican Sarah Steelman who is running for state treasurer says this is necessary to break the cycle of waste tire clean up.

The bill would also create a trust fund to use scrap tires in making safe playground surfacing.

The Missouri Senate gave first round approval to a bill that would move waste tire recycling from the Department of Natural Resources to the Department of Economic Development. Almitra Smith has more from Jefferson City.

The bill is aimed at decreasing waste tire cleanup.

It would offer grants to businesses making products out of recycled tires in an effort to create a market for the tires.

That is why Republican David Klindt, a supporter of the bill, says the scrap tire recycling program should be moved to the Department of Economic Development.
