Republican law makers hold press conference in support of ban ongay marriage

Congressman Tod Akin joined Republican state law makers, today (Monday), in a press conference to support a state ban on gay marriage. Erin Israel tells how Missourians could soon have the chance to vote on whether or not to ban gay marriage in the state.

State Senator Sarah Steelman and Representative Kevin Engler, co-authors of a joint resolution to ban gay marriage, say an amendment to the state constitution would solidify Missouri's refusal to recognize gay marriages from other states.

Steelman says the majority of Missourians do not want the state to recognize gay marriage.

"THIS CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT ALLWOING VOTERS TO VOTE ON IT WOULD SIMPLY STATE THE POLICY AND THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE IN THIS STATE."

Opponents of the resolution say more research on civil unions needs to be done before a flat ban is passed.

The resolution already passed through the Senate and is now awaiting passage by the House.
