Republican Senator Franc Flotron proposed an amendment to the speed limit bill which would raise the limit on urban interstates to 65 miles per hour.

But opposition from the bill's sponsor, Democratic Senator Danny Staples, could destroy the bill. Staples wants to keep the speed limit on urban interstates at 55 miles per hour.

Staples warned he'd kill the bill if the higher speeds are added for the metro areas:

Staples said he promises to let the bill die if the amendment is passed by the Senate. A vote on the amendment is expected soon.
