Governor Keeping Hands Off

January 5, 1996
By: Phill Brooks
State Capital Bureau
Governor Mel Carnahan is staying out of the legislative leadership fight that's tied up the Missouri House. Phill Brooks has the story from Jefferson City:

The governor did call for the House to resolve it's leadership dispute -- suggesting that if it goes on much longer, it could jeopardize the legislature's work.

But Carnahan made it clear that he's not going to pick sides:

Carnahan did say he thought that a Democrat should be elected speaker.

And he says he has talked with lawmakers to encourage communication.

But the governor says that's the limit of his involvement in this unprecidented political standoff in Missouri's legislature.
