Rather than picking sides, we decided to give you, the user, the power to chose between a frame or non-frame display. We've added functions (explained below) to overcome some of the limitations of frames. And we've designed our frame structure in such a way that retains full functionality for browsers that do not support frames.
Finally, we've solved the problem that arises when one frame-based WWW service is called up from a link in another frame-based WWW service (each new frame-based page ends up in an increasingly smaller area of your browser). When you call up MDN, any prior frames are removed so your full browser's window is used for MDN.
There is one requirement on your browser in order to support these MDN frame functions. Your browser must support javascript. If you find that MDN's frame functions are not working, open up Security Preferences under the Options menu item to make sure you have not disabled javascript support.
Unfortunately, there's a glitch that arises with some browsers if you invoke the no-frame command when you have a non-MDN page in the content window. Rather than opening the non-MDN page, you will be jumped to the last MDN you had opened.
The no-frame format offers some features you may find advantageous:
These two buttons are provided to overcome a limitation with the forward and back functions of most browsers in handling frame pages. In most browsers, those buttons do NOT retrieve pages you have called up for a particular frame from the same WWW service. For example, if you used your browser's back button while in MDN's frame mode, you would call up the last non-MDN page you viewd -- NOT the last MDN page that had been displayed in MDN's content frame.
Note, however, this history of pages covers only those pages that have been called up while you were in the frame-display format. If you go to a no-frame format and then return to the frame format, the forward and back buttons will not bring back pages you had called up in the prior frame session.
