The Senate Education Committee heard a bill that would allow governing boards to offer new degree programs.

Wrap: The bill, sponsored by Senator Eric Schmitt, would allow other universities to offer degree programs without the approval of the UM System. Provost Deborah Curtis of the University of Central Missouri was in support of the bill. Curtis said they can't be effective without being able to move forward on their own.

Description: In these times in higher ed it's a challenge to us to remain vital, active and moving forward and to be able to have that lack of clarity really limits our ability to be effective.

Elizabeth Loboa, the dean of the college of engineering at MU, fears the bill would spread the states resources too thin.

In support was Provost Deborah Curtis of the University of Central Missouri. She said they are losing faculty to other institutions that provide better doctoral work.
