Wrap: Senator Kurt Schaefer, who represents Columbia and the University of Missouri and is a lawyer himself, said there is only one reason why the board is filled with so many lawyers.

Actuality:  SCHMIZ.WAV
Run Time:  00:10
Description: "What raises the red flag there for me is why? Why so many lawyers? And I think you have to look at the fact that these are lawyers that also have a relationship with the governor."

Despite Schaefer's criticism of too many lawyers on the board, the Senate approved two more lawyers to the board by voice vote.

Intro:
The Missouri Senate voted to approve two new curators for The University of Missouri System Board despite adding to the number of lawyers already on the board.
RunTime:  0:44
OutCue:  SOC

Wrap: While he says he understands the concern about the number of lawyers on the UM System Board of Curators, Senator Ryan Silvey of Kansas City spoke in favor of former lawyer and senator Philip Snowden and said him practicing law many years ago shouldn't preclude him from being a good curator.

Actuality:  SILVEY.WAV
Run Time:  00:13
Description: "Being a member of the House and member of the Senate and then, for the last 30 years or so, not even really practicing as an attorney, but just having a law degree and maintaining a license should not disqualify him from this board."

Despite the objections of Senator Kurt Schaefer and others about the number of the lawyers on the board, the Senate approved Snowden's nomination as well as the nomination of Maurice Graham.
