Wrap: Workers preparing to install the third "step-up" transformer welcome the new generation of technology.

Alan Sullivan-- consulting engineer for Ameren Missouri-- says he supports this change from the old transformers, which his grandfather helped install nearly 80 years ago.

Actuality:  SULLI2.WAV
Run Time:  00:17
Description: It is absolutely worth the money we spent, both from a safety standpoint for the people who work here, environmentally for the Osage River below us and for safety of any pedestrian or vehicle traffic on the road above us.

He estimated these transformers will last between 30 to 50 years and will raise voltage by 10 times the original amount.

Wrap: The third Bagnell Dam generator which could eliminate the chance of an oil spill or an explosion is being installed.

Ameren Missouri is replacing four deteriorating transformers with environmentally safe models.

The company's consulting engineer Alan Sullivan says the transformers new in North America will be worth the 16 million dollar investment after all four are replaced.

Actuality:  SULLI3.WAV
Run Time:  00:13
Description: We have to acknowledge that to be compliant with environmental law and to reduce risk of environmental hazard, you have to spend money.

Sullivan said the new transformers will be powered by non-explosive gas.

Wrap: New technology at the Bagnell Dam will set the standard for generating energy more efficiently.

Engineers estimate the switch from the 80-year-old oil powered generators will increase the transformer's voltage by 10 times.

Ameren's consulting engineer says he could see the Japanese-made technology adopted around the United States only if other states prioritize the same environmental concerns.

Actuality:  SULLI1.WAV
Run Time:  00:11
Description: As far as other people in the United States picking up on these, they would have to make a similar decision that they had an area they just couldn't tolerate an oil spill.

Sullivan said the new transformers will also be safer, as they are now powered using a non-explosive gas.
