Teens would need parental consent in order to use tanning beds, according to a bill approved by the House Tuesday.
RunTime:  0:42
OutCue:  SOC

Wrap: The bill requires parents of children under the age of 18 to sign a consent form before they use a U-V tanning bed.

Sponsor of the bill Republican Lee's Summit Representative Gary Cross says the purpose of the bill is to educate parents about the dangers of tanning so they can make informed decisions for their children.

Republican Warrensburg Representative Denny Hoskins says it would be difficult to enforce the consent forms.

Run Time:  00:09
Description: "I don't believe that we need government and we need to spend our law enforcement resources going in to different tanning salons and monitoring to make sure that they've got permission slips."

The bill needs another round of approval from the House before moving to the Senate.

Wrap: Threats of cancer within his family prompted Republican Lee's Summit Representative Gary Cross to sponsor the legislation.

He says the purpose of the bill is to raise awareness about the dangers of tanning so that parents can make educated decisions for their children.

His daughter has been diagnosed with pre-cancerous cells.

Actuality:  CROSS1.WAV
Run Time:  00:10
Description: "My daughter, 17-years-old, in high school was advised by her family practitioner to give it up. She did not give it up. I did not know the effects of tanning."

Cross says he would have advised his daughter differently, if he had known.

Those opposed to the bill say it would be difficult to regulate and enforce.

Wrap: Under the plan, a parent would need to be present in order to sign a consent form for their child to use a U-V tanning bed.

Sponsor of the bill Republican Lee's Summit Representative Gary Cross says the purpose is to educate parents about the dangers of tanning so they can make good decisions for their children.

Republican St. Charles County Representative Kurt Bahr questioned the plan's effectiveness.

Actuality:  BAHR9.WAV
Run Time:  00:08
Description: "What if we have children who sit on the deck and tan should we not have warnings, hey, you know, don't let your kids sit out in the sun too long?"

But Cross says that's not what his bill is about.

Opponents also argued it would be difficult to enforce.

The bill needs one more House vote before going to the Senate.
