Wrap: A House committee began to address a bill today that would eliminate tenure for Missouri's teachers.

Contracts would no longer be awarded based on seniority but annual evaluations based on teacher and student performance. According to the bill's sponsor, Republican Rep. Scott Dieckhaus, student performance would be based on growth over time and not only standardized test scored.

Members of the committee questioned whether evaluating teachers on student performance would impose unfair standards state-wide.

The bill's sponsor Dieckhaus said the bill will allow school boards to establish a definition of student growth that would apply to their local district.

The committee did not vote on the bill and is not yet scheduled to take up the issue again.
