Senate rejects efforts to eliminate proposed state worker pay increase

The Missouri Senate rejected an attempt to eliminate a proposed wage increase for state workers.

Wrap: By a vote of 17 to 15, the Senate voted down a plan which would have eliminated a proposed 2 percent wage increase for state workers making less than $45,000.

Senate Majority Leader Tom Dempsey offered the plan to eliminate the wage increase.

He said he supports state workers, but tough decisions have to be made.

Description: "I believe there are too many state employees, we should have a smaller state government but we should treat the ones who remain better and we could do that with those savings."

Even with the increase, the Senate's proposed budget is still 87 million dollars below the proposed budgets of the Governor and House.
