State Capitol Bureau
Links: HB71

Intro:
A death knell sounds for a local control bill the same day it gained Senate committee approval with a 6 to 2 vote.
RunTime:  0:43
OutCue:  SOC

Wrap: St. Louis County Democratic Senator Maria Chapell-Nadal says she and ten other senators will filibuster and kill the bill.

The measure would give St. Louis city control of its own police department.

But Chapell-Nadal says the bill would strip officers of several benefits like life insurance.

St. Louis City Democratic Representative Jamilah Nasheed is sponsoring the bill.

She says the senators' filibuster will have no effect on the measure.

Actuality:  NASHED13.WAV
Run Time:  00:11
Description: It's unfortunate that Senator Maria Chapell-Nadal is looking to be an obstructionist. I think at the end of the day, she cannot even uphold a filibuster.

Until then, the Senate will continue to review the bill.

Wrap: St. Louis County Senator Maria Chapell-Nadal's claim comes on the same day The Senate Financial Committee voted in favor of the bill.

The measure is Democratic St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay's effort for local control.

But the two committee members who voted against the bill are the committee's only Democratic members.

Chapell-Nadal says the bill would strip St. Louis police officers and their families of several benefits like life insurance.

Actuality:  NADAL.WAV
Run Time:  00:09
Description: It would be a huge devestation to police officers that have served, and will serve, in the future of St. Louis city.

St. Louis City Democratic Representative Jamilah Nasheed is sponsoring the bill.

She says officers would have the same benefits St. Louis firefighters currently have.
