The bill's sponsor, Republican Senator Matt Bartle, says the bill would issue stipends for teachers of math and science, as a type of incentive to attract more educators to the struggling subjects.

Bartle says more money needs to be spent on getting more teachers into the classroom.

Description: "We have decay happening in math and science because we're simply not willing to recognize that we are not paying enough to attract enough math and science teachers."

The bill would also make it possible for teachers to get certified if they earned a bachelor's degree in either math or science related subjects. Reporting from Jefferson City, I'm Max Hyman.

The bill would direct money from tax dollars to individuals who teach math and science.

Otto Fajen, of the Missouri National Education Association says there are already programs in place that put the idea of teaching in college students' heads.

"We have loan forgiveness programs that can focus on this that can really get kids in college while they're thinking about that college debt, with an attractive incentive to say 'choose to be certified in teaching physics. Choose to be certified in teaching math.'"

Bartle describes loan forgiveness as completely inadequate and that other steps need to be taken to encourage college students and graduates to teach math and science.
