Intro: Licensed Professional Counselors may be considered Mental Health Professionals with the help of one senator's bill.
A bill sponsored by Democratic Senator Frank Barnitz passed out of committee and would change Mental Health Professional requirements. Currently Missouri recognizes social workers, and other personnel to assess the detainment of a patient against their will. This bill would include LPCs as Mental Health Professionals according to the Missouri Department of Health. Joseph Parks, with the Department of Mental Health testified for Barnitz. The bill is set to appear on the Senate Consent Calendar.

Description: These are not evaluations for commitment, they are evaluations that would detain people for up to ninety-six hours to determine whether you need to go to court to have them committed.
The bill would not give LPCs authority to diagnose a patient.
