Intro: Missouri lawmakers attempt to prohibit lawsuits against businesses for failing to protect their customers against possible crimes. Suvro Banerji (SUE-vro BAN-er-gee) has more from the state capitol.
Business owners will be prohibited from restricting any person from lawfully possessing a firearm in a motor vehicle under a bill that has been introduced in the state House.
Representative Stanley Cox sponsored this bill that establishes that the business owners has no absolute duty to implement security measures for the protection of its customers.
Questions were raised regarding the increasing proliferations of car break-ins where weapons had been stolen and used in crimes.
Cox says that this bill will not expand premises liability for criminal acts of third parties.
The bill also states that business owners should take necessary steps in case they know that the acts are occurring or are about to occur could pose imminent injury to a person or that the same criminal acts have occurred on the premises within the prior 24 months and is likely to occur again.
