No Benefits for Relatives

Date: April 15, 2008

State Capitol Bureau
Links: SB 1234

Intro: A bill that passed through from the House on Tuesday would block politicians and their relatives from benefiting from tax credits of large-scale projects. Rebecca Layne has more from Jefferson City.  RunTime:0:42
OutCue: SOC

The bill is designed to provide 880 million dollars in tax breaks to a Canadian firm to build an aircraft manufacturing plant in Kansas City.

Missouri Senate approved an amendment to the bill that would forbid politicians and their relatives from getting jobs at this plant.

Democratic Senator Victor Callahan had this to say:

Actuality:  CALLAHAN.WAV
Run Time: 00:13
Description: I don't want anybody from this building or the governor's mansion to have some family member involved in this, and then we read about it six months from now and go, 'Man, why didn't we try to put a lock on that door.'

Callahan's amendment would prohibit family members as distant as grandparents to benefit from the aircraft plant's tax credits.

Intro: A bill that was passed through the House would make it impossible for politicians and their relatives to benefit from 880 million dollars in tax credits from an aircraft manufacturing plant in Kansas City. Rebecca Layne has more from Jefferson City. RunTime:0:48

The large-scale Canadian firm building the aircraft manufacturing plant would be forbidden to hire politicians and their family members.

Kansas City Democrat Victor Callahan used an analogy to explain the importance of his amendment, which banned even grandparents and granchildren from working at the plant.

Actuality:  CALL1.WAV
Run Time: 00:17
Description: There's an old children's fable, Winnie the Pooh and the honey pot. And I just want to put a very big lock and chain around the honey pot, and I don't want to read about any conflicts that anybody in this building has. And I don't want to have somebody have their snout stuck in the honey pot.
But a Republican Senator says the amendment is piling on and an open invitation to litigation.

However, an added amendment on Tuesday would not allow the firm to hire politicians and their relatives.  Rebecca Layne has more from Jefferson City. RunTime:0:45
OutCue: SOC

The amendment by Democratic Senator Victor Callahan would prohibit employers of the manufacturing plant to hire government officials and their family members.

Republican Senator Luanne Ridgeway says the amendment is an unnecessary piling on of the bill.

Actuality:  RIDGEWAY WAV
Run Time: 00:15
Description: Our Department of Corrections, for example, spends millions and millions of dollars every year. And yet, we're not concerned about who's the garbage contractor with them. We're not concerned about whether or not I have a brother, sister, an aunt, or an uncle that works for the Department of Corrections.
The amendment would ban grandparents and grandchildren from being hired.
