Missouri Motor Carriers oppose tolls

Officials for Missouri's largest shipping organization are worried about the negative effects a toll system on Interstate 70. Evan Godt (Got) reports from Jefferson City.

The Missouri Motor Carriers Association says that MODOT's plan for tolls on I-70 would be an unnecessary hassle for drivers shipping across the state.

Motor Carriers Association President George Burruss is worried about the side effects of such a plan.

Contents: Given the cost that's been estimated, a number of truckers just wouldn't continue to use I-70.

Burruss says that big rigs would avoid the interstate by taking smaller highways which might not be able to handle the extra volume of traffic.

MODOT's plan to put toll booths on I-70 is being met with stiff opposition from the Missouri Motor Carriers Association.

Motor Carriers Association President George Burruss says he doesn't want his truckers paying tolls on a highway that's already been paid for.

Contents: Of course it needs to be maintained but our view is that should be done with traditional highway funding, not with tolls.

The tolls would be used to expand the highway to six lanes near St. Louis and Kansas City.
