Vaccine shortage affects schools

The shortage of flu vaccinations has officials concerned for the health of Missouri schoolchildren. Evan Godt reports from Jefferson City.

Flu season has always been a concern for schools but this season could be particularly bad.

Department of Education spokesman Jim Morris talked about the effect the vaccine shortage will have this year.

Contents: The shortage of vaccine situation, if we do have a problem, then it may make matters worse both for students and staff.

Health officials aren't passing down any formal guidelines to schools. They do recommend that parents keep their kids home at the first sign of illness and those with symptoms avoid institutional settings such as nursing homes.

The department says that since flu seasons are so hard to predict, they are not handling student health care any differently this year than they normally would.

Health officials hope parents slow the spread of the flu by keeping their children home at the first sign of illness.
