Maxwell Drops Out

Missouri's lieutenant governor announced Tuesday he will not run for relection. Aidian Holder has the story from Jefferson City:

Joe Maxwell told a hastily called news conference that a medical condition of his wife, Sarah, prevented him from spending the time necessary for a re-election campaign.

But the central Missouri Democrat stressed he was not giving up on a future political career:

Contents: Maxwell said his top priority was to his family, but that the family had not decided to abandon higher office at some time in the future.

Maxwell said he would serve out the remainder of his term as Democrats scramble to find a replacement candidate.
