National and state Chambers of Commerce say due to high job loss, Missouri is in a state of emergency.

Nishi Gupta has the story.

Missouri leads the nation in jobs lost in 2002, according to statistics from the U.S. Department of Labor. Missouri Chamber of Commerce President Dan Mehan says 78,000 lost jobs is disturbing and it is time to for lawmakers to do something about it.

RunTime: 10
OutCue: "one silver bullet."
Contents: "There's a real human cost to this. And it's people that have lost their jobs and lost their livelihood for whatever reason, there's a whole myriad of reasons right now. We can't pin down one silver bullet."

Mehan says one of the causes for lost jobs is that businesses are laying off workers to make-up for money lost in court from unecessary lawsuits. He says worker compensation and medical malpractice reform is needed to stop this trend.

Senate Minority Leader Ken Jacob of Columbia says reform isn't the issue. Jacob says the chamber is using it's political influence to increase it's bottom line and decrease employee rights.
