The Senate on Wednesday Amended a Bill that Establishes Sales Tax Holiday

JEFFERSON CITY - Missourians may get more out of their money during this year's summer sales.

The Missouri Senate Wednesday amended a bill that would establish a time period during which sales taxes would be waived.

The bill creates a state and local sales tax holiday for items of clothing, school supplies and personal computers, up to a certain amount.

The tax holiday period would affect such goods sold during two three-day periods in August of 2002 and 2003.

"This is a matter of $6 million dollars in tax savings to the people that pay taxes every day and every year that I think in some way ought to be considered," said Senate President Pro Tem Peter Kinder, R-Cape Girardeau, who is sponsoring the bill.

"The bill has worked well in eight or nine other states," he said.

Sen. John Schneider, D-St. Louis County, added an amendment which would require that a minimum raise of $1,000 be made to all state employees if the bill were to become law.

"We'll have to see exactly what the impact of the amendment is but I was willing to swallow hard and accept it today to keep the bill moving," Kinder said.

Sen. Ken Jacob, D-Columbia, sponsored a similar bill in the past calling for a sales tax exemption on clothes for one week.

"I am in support of the concept and I would like to see a tax holiday passed", he said.
