House Committee Approves Cardinals Stadium Bill

The plan to build a new stadium for the Cardinals and other projects around the state is on its way to the floor of the Missouri House.

I'm Johnathan Woodward for Missouri Capital Caucus.

The House Commerce & Economic Development committee passed the bill on an 11 to 8 vote.

The bill gives sales tax money for a new stadium for the Cardinals, renovations to Kaufmann Stadium in Kansas City, and other economic development projects across the state.

But opposition to the bill continues to run strong.

Representative Jim Murphy of St. Louis County says it doesn't make sense for the state to fund entertainers:

Cardinals President Mark Lamping says this is the last time the team will be asking for support in Jefferson City.

Some lawmakers warn that the team could move to Illinois if the House doesn't approve the stadium bill.

The bill passed a House committee on an 11 to 8 vote.

Cardinals President Mark Lamping warned the committee that this was the team's last time asking the state for a new stadium.

Cardinals chairman Bill DeWitt says that's the truth:

But DeWitt won't say that means the team is threatening to move to Illinois.

Some lawmakers have said that could happen if the legislature doesn't approve money for the Cardinals.
