Senate debates adopted children having access to birth records

Adopted children could be able to access their birth and adoption records according to a bill that the Senate discussed today. Sonya Harper has the story from Jefferson City.

The Senate debated a bill today that would allow adopted children fifty years of age and older to obtain an unaltered copy of their birth certificate and decree of adoption certificate.

There was controversey over this bill because current law promises birth parents anonymity.

Legislators like Harold Caskey believe that this bill would strip birth parents of this right when they give their children up for adoption.

This bill also contains a provision for birth parents to request that these files not be open for access by their children.
