The Department of Corrections May Certify Its Training of Officers

High turnover rates in the Department of Corrections in recent years has caused one Missouri senator to call for change. Seth Bachelier has the story from Jefferson City...

Republican Senator David Klindt has proposed a commission to certify the training of corrections officers.

Corrections officers need 278 hours of training while police officers need 470 hours.

And some trainers say that corrections officers don't get enough interaction with inmates during training.

Some Democrats agree that certification is a good idea.

But, they say changes will need to be made.

Republican Senator David Klindt says the training of corrections officers is inconsistent.

And Democratic Senator Ken Jacob agrees.

So, Klindt has proposed a commission to certify their training.

Some trainers say the main problem is officers don't get enough interaction with inmates before starting the job.

While both parties agree training is a problem, some Democrats say the proposal needs changes.
