State Auditor reveals major flaws in state's dog breeders inspection program

Missouri is number one in the country for commercial dog breeders and didn't find any of them in violation of any standard of care during the past two years. This was revealed by a new report from the State Auditor.

There are over one thousand commercial dog breeders in Missouri that put over 6 thousand dogs on the market each week, and there are eight state inspectors keeping track of this industry.

But, those inspectors have been doing a poor job according to the audit of their work.

McCaskill also said there were two inspectors that owned breeding companies and that they may have kept improper records relating to hours worked.

A two year audit of the program overseeing Missouri's 1 thousand commercial dog breeders reveals several major areas of concern. Most notably the state inspectors didn't find a single breeder in violation of any rule, while the federal inspectors found 11 breeders in violation during one of the two years of the audit.

In the most flaggerant case, a state and federal inspector visited the same breeder on the same day, and the federal inspector found seven violations while the state inspector found none.

Contents: She says this points out the problem; there shouldn't be a need for two inspectors to visit the same place, if they're doing their job.

Senator Pat Dougherty of St. Louis says he'll introduce a bill addressing this issue.
