JEFFERSON CITY - Like his predecessor -- the late Gov. Mel Carnahan -- Missouri's next governor has made education a top priority.

And also like Carnahan, Bob Holden faces in his first term a potential education crisis. For Carnahan, it was a court case striking down the state's school-funding system. For Holden, it is the potential loss of accreditation by the state's two major urban school districts.

    . $24.5 billion highway funding question confronts Gov.-elect Holden and Missouri's legislature (12/11/00)
    JEFFERSON CITY - MoDOT officials have not shied away from publicizing the funding shortage expected to accompany their 20-year highway and bridge improvement plan -- $24.5 billion in total, which breaks down to roughly $1.2 billion per year.

    That leaves transportation officials and legislators alike wondering whether taxpayers will step up to fill the funding gap, possibly through a gas-tax hike.
