Maxwell says pay raise is unfair

A Missouri legislator says a bill on the governor's desk that will raise pay for lawmakers is unfair to the state's other workers. Aaron Cummins has the story from Jefferson City--

That bill will increase legislators pay by almost $1,500 a year. And it's retroactive to the current fiscal year meaning lawmakers will get paid more for work they've already done.

Senator Joe Maxwell says that's not fair to all the state's workers.

Maxwell says he'd support an equal pay raise for all state workers.

Governor Carnahan vetoed similar legislation last year, but he's said he supports this bill.

A bill awaiting the governor's signature would increase salaries for Missouri legislators, but one lawmaker thinks the proposal is unfair. Aaron Cummins has that story from Jefferson City--

The bill will raise lawmakers salaries by almost 15-hundred dollars a year. But, the increase includes the budget year that ends this June.

Senator Joe Maxwell says lawmakers shouldn't be given preferential treatment that isn't offered to other state workers.

Maxwell says those state workers don't get retroactive pay, so legislators shouldn't.

The governor vetoed a similar bill last year.
