Governor Carnahan claims Senator Ashcroft was reckless in his pursuit to keep Missouri Supreme Court Justice Ronnie White from the Eastern District Federal Judge seat. Farrah Fite has the story from Jefferson City.

Missouri Supreme Court Justice Ronnie White is the only federal judge nominee in the last twelve years to be voted down for a federal appointment. Governor Carnahan accused Senator Ashcroft of conspiring to prevent White from gaining the Eastern District Federal Judge seat because neither Ashcroft or Senator Kit Bond supported White's appointment.

Carnahan says Ashcroft is using White as a "pawn" to turn the Senate election race into a contest over the death penalty.

Contents: Carnahan says Ashcroft wants to boil the race down to who is for the death penalty more and that he doesn't think the public will focus on that issue.

Ashcroft did not support White because he thought he was too lenient in sentencing murderers to the death penalty. The vote on White's appointment proved partisan as both sides voted down party lines. Farrah Fite from Jefferson City.
