A Senate Bill Aims to Stop Social Promotion in Reading.

A Senate bill introduced today/Tuesday would impose standards on reading. Lori Prichard has the story from our Jefferson City Bureau.

Jefferson County Senator Steve Stoll is sponsoring a bill that would stop teachers from passing students without reading skills. In order to advance to the next reading level, students must attend after school tutoring seminars or summer school.

Contents: Stoll says by grade three a student should reading proficiently.

The measure would target kindergarten through third grade students by funding remedial reading programs.

A Missouri State Teacher's Association representative supports the measure. He says every child should earn the grade.
