The House secures enough votes to overthrow Carnahan's Veto

Crowds cheered as the roll call vote for House Bill 427, the one banning partial-birth abortions, passed in the House today(Wednesday). Farrah Fite has this story from Jefferson City.

Those who couldn't get into the gallery waited anxiously on the lawn in front of the capitol to hear what they had come for. The House overrode Governor Carnahan's veto of the partial-birth abortion bill that was passed by both the House and Senate last May.

A two-thirds majority vote was needed and was easily accomplished. Carnhan sought out 55 votes against the override from representatives but came up short-handed. The bill passed by 127 to 34, 18 more votes than needed for the override.

The Senate has finished it's debates on their veto agenda and will look at the partial-birth abortion bill when they reconvene at 10 AM on Thursday.

Carnahan is still looking to sustain his veto.

The Jefferson City community was jolted today by bomb threats stemmed by the on-going debate over the partial-birth abortion bill. Farrah Fite has this story from Jefferson City.

At 11:45 AM today (Wednesday) the superintendent's secretary received a phone call from a hostile male. The man threatened to bomb Jefferson City's District Schools but was not specific as to which ones.

The decision to evacuate schools was made at 12:30 and buses met the students as they waited outside their schools.

The caller made a reference to Governor Carnahan's stance on the partial-birth abortion bill that was voted on in the House today. The Associated Press reported the caller said, "If Carnahan doesn't care about the unborn children, let's see if he cares about those that are living."

Jerry Nachtigal, the governor's spokesperson, said that Carnahan wasn't pointing any fingers.

Contents: The Governor feels this is a cause of the heavy debate and that he wasn't going to blaim the threats on someone who opposed his views on the bill.

The schools are still being searched, no bomb has been found yet and the plan is for student's to return to classes in the morning (Thursday).
