China Forges Agreement with the US to enter the World Trade Organization

Another barrier between China and the rest of the world fell this week. K-B-I-A's Farrah Fite has the story.

China surprised the economic world Monday when it signed off on an agreement with the United States that will make China the newest member of the World Trade Organization. The surprise comes from China agreeing to Clinton Administration guidlelines only a few short months after Congress rejected trade negotiations with the nation.

University of Missouri's Asian Affairs Center Director Terry Weidner says Congress is expected to support the agreement.

Weidner anticipates that both Canada and the European Union will follow America's lead in forging similar stipulations with China. Weidner says China's entrance into the World Trade Organization would be the first step for the US in battling its 57 million dollar trade deficit with China.
