The Missouri Senate has approved an amendment that would eliminate state funding for organizations that provide abortion services. Lee McGuire has the story from Jefferson City.
After six hours of debate that lasted well into the night, the Senate adopted an amendment by St. Louis Senator John Schneider.
Schneider's amendment ups the ante in the ongoing struggle between the administration and the legislature over abortion funding.
Planned Parenthood has been one of Governor Carnahan's biggest campaign contributors.
But Schneider's amendment would virtually guarantee that the organization would get no more money from the state.

Schneider's most outspoken opponent was Democrat Ken Jacob of Boone County. Planned Parenthood has stopped performing abortions in that district, in an effort to qualify for state aid.
