Lawyers Argue to Missouri Supreme Court Concerning Sewage Overcharges

40 million dollars was on the line when lawyers for St. Louis City and County citizens asked the Missouri Supreme Court to make the Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District give the money back. Tristin Yeager reports from the state capitol.

The center of the battle involves overcharges made by the Sewer District in 1992 and 1993.

Lawyers for a class-action lawsuit involving area residents say they should get the money back.

But Sewer District lawyers say if the people wanted their money they should have followed the legal steps to get it. Now, they say, it's too late.

The suit has already been thrown out at the circuit and appeals court levels. Alan Kohn, attorney for the Sewer District says he's confident the supreme court court will rule in its favor.

The lawsuit was filed against the Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District. In 1992 and 93, the Sewer District overcharged for sewer service.

At stake is 40 million dollars in overcharges made by the Sewer District. Attorneys for the residents said they should get the money back. Attorneys for the Sewer District said the residents had their chance to get the money back and now it's too late.

Lewis Green, attorney for the St. Louis area residents, said some of his clients tried to follow steps outlined by the Sewer District in order to get their money back, but that the Sewer District ignored their efforts.
