Reports of sexual misconduct in Missouri prisons were a surprise to the State Corrections Department.

The Missouri Corrections Department is launching their own investigation into charges of sexism and racism brought about by a former guard.

The allegations surfaced during a recent House Appropriations Committee hearing.

Corrections spokesman Tim Kniest says that's the first the Department had heard of the accusations.

Kniest also says that if any problems are found, the department will work quickly to solve them.
