Missouri Approves Amendment 4

April 8, 1998
By: Tristin Yeager
State Capital Bureau

Missouri voters overwhelmingly approved the amendment that would allow local school districts to seek voter approval for more bonds. Tristin Yeager reports from the state capitol.

Supporters of the bill stressed the issue of local control.

Missouri voters defeated a similar measure in August 1996.

Boone County Representative Tim Harlan says information made the difference.

Contents: Harlan says in 1996, voters thought the issue was a tax increase, but that for this election, publicity focused that the amendment was an issue of local control.

Harlan says he thought both amendments would pass but he was surprised they passed by such a large margin.
