The TV actor who played Lou Grant came to Missouri's Capitol Monday to urge mercy for a convicted killer scheduled to die just after midnight, Tuesday night. Phill Brooks has the story from Jefferson City:
Ed Asner was the featured speaker at a small rally just outside the governor's office.
To reporters -- including a foreign film team -- Asner openly conceded the purpose of the event:
Asner spoke just after meeting with the governor's staff. They say Mel Carnahan still is reviewing the case that's gotten international attention. But the governor's spokesman says his decision will be based on the facts of the case -- not international lobbying.
