More than a quarter million Missouri cars didn't have liability insurance last year, according to the Insurance Department. Rebecca Sapakie has the story in Jefferson City.

The St. Louis area had a significantly higher rate of uninsured drivers last year than the rest of Missouri. That's the word from Insurance Department spokesman Randy McConnell.

Although Missouri's rate of uninsured drivers dropped slightly, more than seven percent of Missouri drivers do not carry insurance.

McConnell says each uninsured driver hurts the rest of us.

While he wouldn't speculate on reasons why drivers don't carry insurance, McConnell did point out that Missouri insurance rates are lower than the national average.
