August 27, 1996

Missouri is sitting on the sidelines to see how fifteen other states fare in their fight against tobacco companies before the state files a law suit of its own.

Adam Czerwinski (chair-vin-ski) reports from Jefferson City:

Fifteen states are suing tobacco companies trying to get money to treat people sick from smoking.

Missouri has decided to play a wait and see game before filing its own suit.

A spokesman for the Attorney General, says that a trial would cost a lot of money and there is no guarantee of success.

Scott Holste says that before making any decision on a law suit Missouri will watch how things go with the other 15 states.

The Attorney General's Republican opponent in the November elections was unavailable for comment.

From the State Capitol I'm Adam Czerwinski.
