Clinton's Candidacy Dangles in Missouri

Unless state Democrats can pass a last minute change to state convention rules, President Bill Clinton won't be on Missouri's November ballot. Jack Dolan has the story from Jefferson City.

The problem is that the filing deadline for Presidential candidates in Missouri is only one day before the Democratic national convention.

Unless state Democrats can get that deadline made earlier, or change the state rule to allow them to nominate a candidate after the national convention, Clinton won't be on the November ballot.

The good news for Democrats is that they have the changes written and ready to go; the bad news is that Republicans know that--and are in no hurry to help out by allowing debate on the subject; especially since there are so many other issues like abortion and taxes waiting to be heard.

Democratic senator Ronnie Depasco from Kansas City says state Republicans would only make themselves look bad if they don't allow the changes to be heard.

With only five hours left to go, and the stakes suddenly including who gets on the Presidential ballot, the tension is really mounting here at the state capitol. From Jefferson City, I'm Jack Dolan.
