Senate Cracks Down On Animal Abuse

The torture or mutilation of animals can now lead to time behind bars. Brian Higgins has more from the Capitol.

Animal abuse will no longer be tolerated in a bill passed by the Senate. Previous law required both the mutilation and torture of animals in order for a person to be convicted of abuse. However, St. Louis Senator John Scott says this led to some problems.

Contents: Senator Scott says a boy in St. Louis set a dog on fire but he could not be prosecuted under old law.

Scott says the bill is restricted to the abuse of mammals only. Individuals convicted under this statute will be guilty of a misdemeanor and a second conviction would result in a felony and up to five years in prison.
